ARD RI Aloha +  ARD RI Boogie

My intention to write this article was to give the Irish Wolfhound breeders, owners and lovers of the breed an insight into the German Irish Wolfhound breedings of the past. To write down the story of a kennel which was for a long period one of the most important Irish Wolfhound kennels in Germany. However, I must confess that it has also interested me, as an Irish Wolfhound breeder, very much how these successful dogs have looked. Therefore, I have been glad that my wish, to write a portrait of their kennel has been recommended positively by Marion and Theo Marpe.

I would like to thank for it Marion and Theo Marpe who have allowed to me to introduce their kennel and trust in me confidently with information and pictures. Regrettably, they have destroyed with their move to Spain all their breeding documents. Therefore, the performed datas, like breeding applications abroad and exhibition success, as for example the huge number of the Landessieger titles of the single dogs, are understandable no more completely.

Quite special thanks go to Martha Ryan, USA. Her extensive data base "IW-Pedigrees" has made easier compiling the breeder broads data to me very much.

During nearly twenty years have influenced ARD RI dogs from the kennel of Theo and Marion Marpe the breeding with the Irish Wolfhounds in Germany, were successful exhibition dogs, breeding dogs and foundation dogs of many new kennels and with it basis for their also successful offsprings.

Besides, everything has quite simply started. Marion Marpe always wanted to have an Afghanhound, Theo against it wanted a big dog. He had seen a photo of „Sulhamstead Manna" in the beginning of the seventies and had had a look at the dogs in natural on the club show of the Dutch Irish Wolfhound club (IERDIE) in the Netherlands. For him was clear, if a dog, then an Irish Wolfhound. They bought one, ignorantly as they were, from a dog trader. This first Irish Wolfhound in the family Marpe was called Finn

By chance they got to know a manufacturer's married couple who owned a dog from England. This dog was bigger around something than their own Finn. One pointed at their inquiry, where from this dog is, them was given an advertising prospectus of the Erindale kennel in England. This type of the dogs illustrated on the flyer had spontaneously done it to Theo Marpe.

After some telephone calls and letters they got an appointment with Marjorie Saunders, kennel Erindale, in England. After driving to England and introducing themselves to Marjorie Saunders, some months later, in autumn, 1976 they could fetch "D Ch UICL JugCh Erindale O'Brian Laird", *09. 07. 1976 (Erindale Adam x Ch Erindale Bernice). O'Brian Laird was never used to the breeding

In 1977 Marion and Theo were with friends together on the CRUFTS in England and visited on their way home Marjorie Saunders. Marion was completely done by the 7-year-old "Jason of Sunningdale" and would have best taken this. Theo Marpe, nevertheless, liked the young dog whom Marjorie had got back. This young male had come back in the kennel, because his owners with the already available Irish Wolfhound, a toddler and an Irish Wolfhound puppy were demanded too much. Marjorie Saunders persuaded Marion that it no sense makes an old Irish Wolfhound with half a tail to take. Thus it came that this young dog "Erindale Lorimar", *12. 10. 1975, (GB IRL Ch Erindale Triston x Erindale Countess), called Guiness was transported on the back seat of the car, straight across the legs by Marion and friend recumbent to Germany. By his stoic rest and balance temperament during the crossing and the direct eye contact, from head to head, Lorimar could also conquer Marion's heart.

Family Marpe owned with it in 1977 three Irish Wolfhound dogs at the age of 3, 2 and 1 year and the, at first as a companion for Finn there come, Afghan's bitch Shiva. By this Afghan's bitch family Marpe made the acquaintance of Erika Rödde, Afghan Hounds kennel "Katwiga" and Karlheinz Nothas, the chairperson at that time of the Duisburger racing association. Shiva constantly runs out and was brought by the people whom they took up always to Erika Rödde because everyone knews that she breeds these Afghan sighthounds. These both people persuaded Marion and Theo Marpe at last also to become a member in the racing association Duisburg and in 1976 in the German sighthound breeding and racing association (DWZRV) and to visit exhibitions with their dogs. Then this became Theo Marpe's part.

Erindale Sadie +O´Brian Laird + Lorimar

On one of these exhibitions they were demanded behind by the judge, Mrs. Phila Herkeens-Verschuuren, where from then the dogs would be and they should breed with it absolutely. At the end of the driving home of this exhibition Marion and Theo Marpe made the decision Irish Wolfhounds to breed. So they contacted Marjorie Saunders again whether this did not have a bitch for them. Afterwards all editions were finished for a kennel and the kennel name "ARD RI" was born and officially registered. ARD RI, the old Irish name for the highest leader or king. Theo Marpe found this name suitably for the king of the dogs, the Irish Wolfhound.

Some time later the one-year-old "D Ch Erindale Kelly of Sunningdale", *01. 04. 1976, (Jason of Sunningdale x Erindale Brid) entered in the house Marpe. Kelly was a smaller bitch, with a wonderful head, an independent character and the touphen being of her grandmother "Brid of Ballytobin".

Kelly became the mother of the first ARD RI litter. On the 19th of May, 1978 ten puppies were born. Father of the litter was "Erindale Lorimar". Two champions, "Int D B L Ch ARD RI Aloha", "D Ch ARD RI Artara" and the Verbandsjugendsiegerin "ARD RI Anoona" have arisen from this connection. The litter repetition brought on the 15th of May, 1980 the C-litter with three puppies. Kelly had their third litter, the ARD RI F-litter, on the 15th of May 1981 after the male "Eros van de Dampoort" (Outhwaite Trostan x B Ch Royden Glenda, a daughter of Jason of Sunningdale). Both champions "D VDH Ch ARD RI Finlora" and "D Ch ARD RI Fancy" arose from this combination. Kelly had three litters in the kennel ARD RI with a total of 23 puppies. Under it four champions. She died at the age of seven years of torsion.

Erindale Lorimar, Sadie, Kelly und O´Brian Laird

In search of an other bitch for their breeding Marion remembered the small red brindle bitch whom she had seen in the puppyies outlet, when they picked up Lorimar. In another visit in England Theo Marpe should call in on Marjorie again and ask for this bitch. On the day as him from England came back Marion was not at  home. In the evening she was welcomed by Theo with a sad face. He meant Marjorie would have said no. When she in the sitting room came, the small red brindle, meanwhile almost one year-old "D Ch Erindale Sadie", *12. 02. 1977 (GB IRL Ch Erindale Triston x Erindale Countess) laid under the table. Sadie was a fullsister to Lorimar

After now some bitches lived in the kennel, there were problems among the males. Lorimar and Finn did not get on any more. Thus Marion and Theo decided, of heavy heart, to give Finn to a friend. There he lived up to his death at the age of eleven years like a crown prince

"D Ch Erindale Sadie", *12. 02. 1977 became the mother of the B-litter in the kennel ARD RI. For them they had selected for her first litter the male "Eaglescrag Fingal". This dog was in the possession of Jürgen Papenfuss and Jürgen Rösner, kennel Oelmühle, in Germany. They  wanted an out cross and they liked this dog because of his substance and his excellent blood line. Three champions "D Ch ARD RI Breagha", "D Ch ARD RI Beaulah" and "Int D L Ch ARD RI Boogie", arose *12. 06. 1979 from this combination. All three bitches decisively contributed to the breeding success of the kennels in which they were used.

In Sadie´s litter with "ARD RI Aloha",  the ARD RI E-litter, *20. 10. 1980, also fell three champions. "D Ch ARD RI Esha", "D Ch ARD RI Eela" and "D Ch ARD RI E'Lorna". Sadie had another two other litters. The H-litter to the Belgian male "VDH Europajugendsieger Finghinn van de Dampoort" (ARD RI Aloha x Royden Jubiana) born on the 26.07.1982. And the M-litter, born on the 05.03.1984 with the own male „Int D L Ch ARD RI Gillie“. Sadie himself became nearly eleven years old and also her children became everybody old. She became German Champion and Jugendwinner Brabant in 1978.

"Int D B L Ch Erindale Lorimar", *12.10.1975 was used in the kennel Ard RI three times. He was the father of the ARD RI A-litter with "Erindale Kelly of Sunningdale". From it it arose among others his first successful son "Int D B L Ch ARD RI Aloha", *19.05.1978. In his second litter with "Int D L Ch ARD RI Boogie" fell seven puppies from what of three later champions became. Be under it his second successful son „Int D L Ch ARD RI Gillie“, *17.09.1981.

Lorimar was used a total of nine times in Germany and Holland to the breeding. Five champions arose from his nine litters with a total of 61 puppies, all of them in the kennel ARD RI.

He himself became Weltjugendsieger in Denmark in 1978, Bundessieger in Austria in 1979 and Winner UICL in 1980. Lorimar became nine years old. He died at night as Theo Marpe returns of an official journey. As if he had waited only for his comeback.
